Progress Weightings

Overview

Progress weightings allow you to customise how Overall Progress and Learning Aim Progress are calculated for a learner. When enabled, weightings can be applied to learning aims and units to determine how much each contributes to the learner’s progress.

Who Can Use This Feature?

  • Centre Manager
  • Internal Quality Assurer (with permission)
  • Assessor (with permission)

Centre Settings

The following setting must be enabled:

  • Enable learning aim and unit weightings

Permissions

  • Manage learner accounts

How Progress Weightings Work

When weightings are disabled, progress is calculated based on:

  • The total number of criteria
  • The number of criteria completed

When weightings are enabled:

  • You can assign weighting values to Learning Aims and Units.
  • Learning Aim weightings affect Overall Progress.
  • Unit weightings affect Learning Aim Progress.

Steps to Set Progress Weightings

Option 1: Set Weightings in a Learner’s Portfolio

To change Overall Progress:

  • Access the learner’s portfolio.
  • Click the Learning Aims tab.
  • Add a number to the Weighting field for every Learning Aim.
  • Click Save.

To change Learning Aim Progress:

  • Click the Units tab.
  • Add a number to the Weighting field for every Unit within each Learning Aim.
  • Click Save.

Option 2: Set Weightings in a Framework Template

Learning Aim Weightings

  • Click Centre in the navigation bar.
  • Click Framework Templates.
  • Create a new template or edit an existing one.
  • Click the Learning Aims tab.
  • Add weighting numbers for each Learning Aim.
  • Click Save.

Unit Weightings

  • Click the Units tab.
  • Add weighting numbers for each Unit.
  • Click Save.

Changing a Framework Template

Only a Centre Manager can edit progress weightings on a Framework Template.

Important: Updating weightings in a Framework Template will not update existing learners already assigned to that template.

To apply the changes:

  • The Framework Template must be reassigned to the learner(s).

Warning: Reassigning a Framework Template will override all existing learning aim and unit selections.

Additional Notes

  • Progress weightings only affect actual progress unless the Centre setting “Apply weightings to target progress” is enabled.
  • An example file explaining weightings can be downloaded from this article.

✅ Tip: Use weightings when learning aims or units vary significantly in size or importance.
